Dorte and I decided to grab breakfast to go from Pasteis de Belem. They are famous for the pastel de nata.
Look at the tile work on the building.

It was a hard choice. So many delicious looking goodies.

We are on our way to Belem Tower, trying to beat the crowds.
We walked right by Jeronimos Monastery. It was huge! This place has been a National Monument since 1907 and is a UNESCO site. The lines get so long to go inside.

If I had more time I would have liked to go inside. I bet it's really pretty inside.

We arrived at Belem Tower. This is a 16th century fortification used to control ships coming and going on the Tagus River. It's a UNESCO site. The lines weren't too long this early.

Walking the boardwalk to enter. The tide was low.
What a beautiful and ornate place for a customs site.

We climbed up to the top. Here is the view looking out at the Tagus.

This is a passage soldiers would use to get from one side of the turret to the other. I can't imagine going through this with guns.

The views are so beautiful.
Here's a view from the top.
Then we toured the cannon area. So many set all around the building.

Please see Part 2 for our picnic on the Tagus River.
